Darkroom Lessons are small-group sessions for 4–6 participants, offering a focused introduction to black-and-white printing. Each 3-hour session provides guided instruction, hands-on making, and time to work independently within a supportive studio environment.

About the Sessions

Designed for photographers at a similar stage of practice, these lessons emphasise clarity, process, and material understanding. Participants learn foundational darkroom techniques through demonstration and supervised printing.

  • Preparing the darkroom and working safely

  • Understanding negatives and print potential

  • Exposure testing, contrast control, and tonal decisions

  • Dodging, burning, and refining a print

  • Producing contact sheets

  • Archival washing and finishing

Who It’s For

These sessions suit photographers seeking a structured introduction to analogue printing, or those returning to darkroom work after time away. No prior experience is required.

  • Group size: 4–6 participants

  • Chemistry is provided. Participants are to bring their own paper.

  • NZ$ 95 per participant

What to Bring:

Black-and-white negatives (35mm, 120, or sheet film).

Black and white silver gelatin paper. This can be purchased in Hamilton or Auckland or online and we may have some extra for sale in the studio.

A sample negative can be provided if needed.
