Education

Private Lessons

Tailored, one-on-one (or one-on-two) sessions designed to meet your specific learning goals. These lessons provide focused, practical guidance in both technical darkroom skills and art practice development.

Available topics include:

  • Black and white film developing using sustainable plant-based processes

  • Making darkroom prints.

  • Alternative photographic processes such as cyanotype, lumen printing and phytograms.

Sessions run for 1–3 hours and can be booked as one-off lessons or as part of an ongoing learning pathway.

After you have learnt how to use the darkroom then you can rent our darkroom and work independently.

Small Group Lessons

Small group sessions for 4–6 participants, offering the same depth of learning as private lessons in a more collaborative and affordable format. These sessions run for 1–3 hours and are ideal for learning alongside others at a similar stage of practice.

You’ll move through practical, step-by-step darkroom processes, receive personalised feedback, and experiment with your own creative ideas. By the end of the session, you’ll leave with finished prints, practical skills, and the confidence to continue exploring analogue photography independently.

Very small class sizes of 4-6 people ensure individual attention, making this an ideal workshop for anyone wanting to reconnect with the tactile, immersive joy of film and printmaking.

Weekend Workshops

Workshops are immersive learning experiences that run over 1–3 days. They cover a range of photographic techniques, supported by theory, discussion, and plenty of hands-on practice. Workshops are ideal for deep skill-building and creative immersion.

Learning is guided by educators at Halide, Kate van der Drift or Cassey Locke with special guest teachers and artists taking weekend workshops. There is a focus on darkroom practice, sustainable processes, and meaningful contemporary image-making. Students receive personalised feedback in an inspiring and supportive studio setting.

If there is something that you would like to learn in a workshop setting, feel free to get in touch!
